The Best Colorado Springs Hikes: A Colorado Mountain Club Pack Guide
By the Pikes Peak Group, CMC, with Greg Long

From the diverse scenery of its city parks to the 14,115 summit of Pikes Peak, the Colorado Springs area has hiking adventures for everyone.

• Whether you have just an hour or an entire day, The Best Colorado Springs Hikes has a trail for you.

• The Pack Guide format is a convenient and welcome companion on your explorations.

• Detailed directions and full-color maps make it easy to find your way.

The variety of hikes in the Pikes Peak region is astounding. If you are looking for an easy stroll close to town for rumination, or a full-day adventure that will leave you gasping for air, or something in between, The Best Colorado Springs Hikes has 20 superb Colorado Springs trails for you.

If you have ever wondered about that big mountain looming over town, you’ll find a couple of paths to its summit. If you are more interested in catching great views of the peak from down low, many of the trails provide great panoramic views of the iconic mountain. Lovers of geology can explore incredible sandstone formations in the Garden of the Gods and Red Rock Open Space, or the smooth granite of the Lost Creek Wilderness.

For the less experienced, start with the Greenway Trail that wends its way along Monument Creek through downtown. That trail connects with an extensive trail system including the Santa Fe Trail and the Front Range Trail, and is easily accessible and flat. On the other hand, if you have a good deal of hiking experience you can try the Barr Trail to the top of Pikes Peak—14 miles of steep hiking that is not easy and not particularly accessible.

The members of the PIKES PEAK GROUP spent a good amount of time discussing all their favorite trails in the Colorado Springs region and then voted on the 20 best trails. All the trails descriptions, photographs, and maps are by members of The Colorado Mountain Club.
