Summer Adventure Courses

Come climbing or explore the mountains with the CMC Youth Education Program! Specialized 1 - 5 day courses offer outdoor skill-building and adventure! We offer programs for all ages and abilities. Rock Climbing Classes & Multi-day Courses

Intro to Rock Climbing

Indoor and outdoor climbing instruction for youth with little or no climbing experience, but lots of interest! This five-day course focuses on technical rock climbing instruction, decision-making, and making new friends.

Participants will learn about outdoor safety, equipment, knot tying, belaying, and rappelling in a small, supportive environment. Five day format includes two days of indoor climbing and three days of outdoor climbing.

Maximum 12 participants.

Course meets Mon. - Fri. 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the American Mountaineering Center (AMC) in downtown Golden with daily field trips to local open space parks. Drop-off and pick-up is at the AMC.

Ages: 11-15 years old.

Fee: $345 Includes transportation during course, gear use, and snacks.

Intermediate Rock Climbing

This year we offer 5 days of outdoor climbing! Do you want to gain experience on real rock and learn new techniques? This 5-day course is catered to youth with an interest in outdoor climbing and achieving personal goals. The course content will encourage 'challenge by choice' as individuals work at advancing strength and technique on various rock types. Each day we will travel to a new outdoor location and practice climbing on different types of rocks and environments. Previous climbing experience is recommended.

Maximum 12 participants.

Course meets Monday- Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the American Mountaineering Center (AMC) in downtown Golden with daily field trips to local open space parks. Drop-off and pick-up is at the AMC.

Ages: 12-16 years old.

Fee: $355 Includes transportation during course, gear use, and snacks.

Advanced Rock Climbing

This 5-day course was designed for youth who have taken a previous Intermediate Rock course. Our individualized course instruction will introduce the physics behind climbing through movement and gear placement. Participants will learn the basics of anchor building, practice a multi-pitch climb led by trained staff, and understand the skills needed to become 'independent' climbers. Previous climbing experience is required.

Maximum 8 participants.

Course meets Monday- Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the American Mountaineering Center (AMC) in downtown Golden with daily field trips to local open space parks. Drop-off and pick-up is at the AMC.

Ages: 13 - 17 years old.

Fee: $460  Includes transportation during course, gear use, and snacks.

Camping and Climbing TEEN Getaway - Penitente Canyon and the Great Sand Dunes

Join us for a climbing getaway to Penitente Canyon and the Great Sand Dunes National Park! Whether you have been climbing for years or are completely new to the sport, this 5-day course designed for ages 14-17, will provide many new and challenging experiences. We will spend our days climbing new terrain, learning about the ecosystem, and improving climbing techniques. Our evenings will be spent around camp where participants will play games, assist with chores, and share stories. On Wednesday we will travel across the San Luis Valley and spend the day playing on the Great Sand Dunes.  Course instruction will encourage, decision-making, and leadership in a small co-ed group environment. We suggest participants come prepared to be flexible and understand the importance of working together.


Maximum 9 students


Ages: 14 - 17 years old.

Fee: $650  Includes transportation during course, camping and climbing gear use, meals and snacks. Students who have their own tents are welcome to bring them on the first day.

Multi-day Adventure Courses & Mountain Discovery Day Trips

Mountain Explorers

Learn about Colorado's mountain ecosystems through discovery and adventure! This introductory course is designed for youth with a sense of wonder. Daily hiking and rock climbing field trips will strengthen observation, while participants practice basic survival and navigation skills needed for travel in the mountains. Participants will make a field journal, learn about the 10 essentials and Leave No Trace, build shelters, travel on snow and play games! Five day format will include indoor climbing, outdoor climbing, and three days of hiking. Maximum 12 and minimum 6 participants.

Course meets Mon. - Fri. 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the American Mountaineering Center (AMC) in downtown Golden with daily field trips to local open space parks. Drop-off and pick-up is at the AMC.

Ages: 9 - 12

Meet the Mountains

Explore the foothills through discovery and adventure! This unique three-day course is designed to introduce youth to the outdoors through games, hiking, and exploration. Participants will learn about Colorado's diverse plant and animal life, try rock climbing, practice using a compass, and create a naturalist notebook. Maximum 12 and minimum 6 participants.

Course meets 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the American Mountaineering Center (AMC) in downtown Golden with daily field trips to local open space parks. Drop-off and pick-up is at the AMC.

Ages: 8 - 10 Fee: $250  Includes transportation, supplies, snacks, and gear use. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE!

Teen Ventures! Outdoor Leadership Summit 2014:

June 16-20 * Golden Gate Canyon State Park

A 5-day camping and climbing retreat for 15-18 year olds, set in stunning Golden Gate Canyon State Park! This program is designed to teach the basics of group management, rock climbing site safety and teambuilding facilitation, as they pertain to outdoor leadership. And, of course, to have a LOT of fun!

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to hike, camp, climb, and play games with other teens, while gaining important training necessary to pursue jobs in the field of outdoor leadership! Participation in this camp qualifies students for a YEP summer internship.


Ages: 15-18 years old. Maximum 12 participants, Minimum 6.


Fee: $525 Includes instruction by AMGA certified single pitch instructor and trained outdoor educators, equipment use, transportation, camping fees, and food for 4 nights and 5 days.

Evergreen Middle School Climbing Camp

4-day Rock Climbing Camp for Evergreen Middle School Students

Join your classmates this summer for a custom week-long climbing course designed specifically for Evergreen Middle School students. We will spend each day at a different local climbing crag and sample the best climbing the Front Range has to offer!  All skill levels are welcome and our instructors will give each student the appropriate level of challenge for them. Practice your climbing technique while learning to belay and rappel in a supportive and friendly environment.

 

Dates: June 30th- July 3rd, 2014

Times: 9:30-3:00

Ages: 8-13

Fee: $275.00 includes gear rental, instruction, and snacks

San Luis Valley Adventure Programs

 

Wild Land Adventures

Hiking, rock climbing and exploring the valley! Each day offers a 
new adventure as participants practice observation, survival skills, 
navigation and most importantly having fun outside. No previous 
experience required.

Ages: 9-12

Overnight Climbing Adventure Camps

 

Join us for 5 days of camping and climbing at Penitente Canyon! Learn how to rock 
climb in one of the valley’s best kept secrets. Join us for the best week of your summer 
while we climb, camp and explore the land. This safe and supportive atmosphere is 
designed for all skill levels. No previous climbing experience necessary

Middle School Climbing Camp Dates: July 28 - August 1
High School Climbing Camp Dates: June 16-20

Fee: $500 Includes all gear, food, transportation and camping equipment needed

 

Rock Climbing Day Camps

 

This rock climbing day camp will be the highlight of your summer! We will teach you all you how to rock climb, belay and rappel at Penitente Canyon. Let our certified climbing guides give you a week to remember!
