Stewardship Team Year-End Wrap-Up

By Morgan Anderson, CMC Stewardship Team

Throughout the season, the Stewardship Team had the opportunity to lead projects in trail maintenance, construction, and restoration. Many long days were filled crosscutting in the Raggeds Wilderness and San Isabel National Forest, monitoring trail conditions on the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, building dams in the Rio Grande Natural Area, gathering trail-use data for the Salida Ranger District, and installing post-and-cable fencing in Badger Flats to close off unsustainable roads.

Colorado 14er Disasters, Second Edition

by Mark Scott-Nash

Hiking to the summits Colorado’s many 14,000-foot peaks is an incredibly popular activity, enjoyed by thousands of people every year. But the potential of a serious accident casts a dark shadow on what is usually a great experience.

Colorado 14er Disasters, Second Edition explores the disturbingly easy ways that hikers become stranded, severely injured, or killed on the state’s high alpine peaks. When those accidents happen, the victim is far from help and in an environment where rescue is difficult at best.

Even the most experienced mountaineers are not immune to catastrophe. Seemingly small errors can compound into serious consequences. Sometimes bad luck is a factor yet even in those cases alternative strategies may change the outcome.

Mark Scott-Nash, a veteran mountain rescuer and climber, offers an unflinching exploration of unfortunate incidents. These captivating stories in turn give any mountaineer helpful information for avoiding disaster.

Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru Climbs, Tanzania

July 8-23, 2017

This will be a new variation on previous CMC trips to Kilimanjaro. We will warm up and acclimatize with a 4-day climb of Mt. Meru, 14,968’. Mt. Meru is just West of Kilimanjaro, near Arusha, Tanzania, and will give us great views of Kilimanjaro. Then for the main event, we will climb Kilimanjaro (19,340’), during a 6-day climb on the Rongai Route on the North side of the mountain. CMC has only done one trip ever to Mt. Meru back in 1998 and has never done the Rongai Route on Kilimanjaro. So people who have done the Machame Route on previous CMC trips may be interested in this trip to do a different route on this great mountain as well as the climb of Mt. Meru. Participants are free to arrange their own safari before or after this trip. Leader can provide relevant information.
