Bicycling Section

The CMC conducts bicycling trips around the Denver metropolitan area and in the mountains. These trips are listed in the biannual Activity Schedules . In the activity schedule, the trips are given a rating for pace and level of difficulty.

Pace The pace of the trip is the speed the leader expects the group to travel.
  • Slow: 3 to 9 mph.
  • Moderate: 9 to 15 mph.
  • Fast: 16 mph and faster.
Level of Difficulty Terrain and distance are factors used to determine a trip's difficulty, and apply to a one-day time period:
  • Easy: Up to 25 miles over primarily level ground .
  • Moderate: Up to 50 miles over rolling hills.
  • Difficult: Travel a distance in excess of 20 miles, involving steep terrain such as mountain passes, and/or trips in excess of 60 miles.
General Rules To assure a safe and enjoyable ride, the following rules shall apply to bicycle trips. Participants should ride a bicycle in good condition and be prepared with the equipment (including a spare tube) and ability to repair a flat tire and perform other minor repairs. If there are questions on equipment, contact the trip leader. A bike should be equipped with a carrier for drinking water and snacks, and should have a lock with a cable or chain.

Participants should wear a bike helmet. This requirement is not intended to discourage attendance, but to insure a safe ride. If anyone is uncertain about his/her ability to complete a ride, call the trip leader or section chairman for guidance. When in doubt, start on an easy tour and work up to more difficult tours.

Any participant whose bike is disabled and not repairable on a tour will be sent to the nearest location where s/he can get help or necessary repairs or can wait for pickup.

Denver metropolitan bike tours begin at various locations within the Denver area to reduce the need for car pools. Out-of-town tours may involve car pools to starting location.
