Backpacking is the foundation for any mountaineering adventure; upon
completion of this School you will:
- Have the confidence to plan a backpacking trip of any length regardless
of season.
- Understand the pros and cons on a full specturm of outdoor gear.
- Navigate off-trail using map and compass.
- Receive your Denver Group "B" hiker classification.
- Obtain certification in Mountain
Oriented First Aid (MOFA). This is one of the requirements needed
to qualify as a trip leader and to obtain a Denver Group "D"
classification.
- Have the knowledge and skills needed in a survival emergency.
- Know how to use a Mountaineering Axe (Self Belay/Self Arrest) correctly.
- Develop a new group of hiking partners.
- Have the "School" prerequisite for continuing on to Basic

Note: Denver BMS requires a Class C Hiking Classification to apply.
Since some of our students go on to this class, our instructors will
arrange a few optional "C" Hikes to help you secure this rating
prior to the BMS application deadline. See the BMS link listed above
and the information on Member
Classification for the Denver Group.
