The San Juan Group, organized in 1965, serves CMC members in the southwest portion of Colorado, including Durango. The group offers hikes, climbs, bike tours and other activities at numerous locations in southwest Colorado such as the San Juan Mountains, as well as other trips to more far-flung destinations.
The San Juan Group has an annual meeting plus bi-monthly program nights and meetings, and has recently instituted a series of training programs (see the latest Activity Schedule for current offerings and dates). The Group's regular Orientation Hike reviews CMC policies and procedures, basic equipment needs, and maps and reference guides for the San Juan area.
For trip leaders and others interested in more advanced training, the San Juan Group has begun offering a course in mountaineering training, including glacier travel and crevasse rescue. A basic rock climbing course offers Group members an introduction to technical rock climbing and mountaineering on 5th-class climbs.
For further information on all these activities, contact the CMC Office or the Group chairperson.
