| This foothills area W of Boulder is replete in diversity of geology, history, flora, fauna, etc. The quarried Lyons sandstone from this area was used to build CU buildings in the 1920s. This transition area is rich in a variety of plants and animals. A plethora of grasses, wildflowers, shrubs and trees such as prickley pear cactus, yucca, sandlily, chickweed, wallflower, ponderosa pine & juniper enrich this mountain ecosystem. This prodigious diversity of plants provides shelter and food for a wide variety of fauna such as insects; birds including red-tailed hawk, golden eagle & wild turkey; rabbits; porcupine; coyote; bobcat; mountain lion; etc. This is a wonderful convenient, exemplary area to exercise and recreate in year round, with panoramic views of the high plains and mountains. |
