 Capturing the Climb: A Historical and Geographical Look at How and Why People Climb Mountains
Tour the American Mountaineering Museum to learn about the pioneers of mountaineering throughout the world. Students will recognize how people climb through interactive stations and classroom activities. Activities may include: physical preparation for an expedition, topographic map reading and navigation, equipment from the 1920's to today, and more! Indoor rock climbing may be added on if time allows.
Age: 5th-12th grade
Class length: 2.5 hours (4 hours recommended if climbing is added)
Fee: $6/person; 1 chaperone per 15 students may attend free; $12/person if climbing is added

 Tomorrow's Mountains: Climate, Culture and
Conservation in High Places
Recognize the effects of climate change on mountain environments. Through hands-on activities and a museum tour, students will learn about global climates and the importance of glaciers. This class encourages small group interaction and decision-making, as students make observations and discuss solutions.

 Avalanche Science
Gain awareness of the powerful destructive forces of avalanches through hands-on activities. Students will simulate avalanches, measure slope angles, build snow packs and practice using rescue equipment. Classes encourage teamwork and decision-making among participants.* Additional 4 hour field class may be arranged at a nearby open space or mountain site.

 The Science of Climbing
Physical, Earth, or Life Science
Bring the concepts of friction, force, and motion to life;
discover what rock types are good for climbing; or learn about
adaptations needed to survive in the Rocky Mountains through
hands-on experiments and rock climbing. Teachers choose a
science focus (physics, geology, or biology) and then try-out
rock climbing on our indoor climbing wall. See
curriculum outline. * Outdoor climbing and additional skills instruction can be custom designed for your group.

 Introduction to Rock Climbing
Build cohesion among your students through engaging games encouraging communication, trust, and challenge. CMC staff will provide the safety while youth focus on body mechanics and personal challenge of indoor climbing. Equipment use and demonstration included. * Outdoor climbing and additional skills instruction can be custom designed for your group.

Beginning Rock Climbing Skills
Further top-rope climbing instruction for participants wanting to build technical skills. Participants will learn to tie knots, belay, back-up belay, and strengthen technique in small groups. Instruction may also include rappelling. Equipment use and demonstration included in cost. Class can be custom designed to meet Boy Scout Climbing Badge and Girl  Scout High Adventure Badge requirements. * Outdoor climbing can be custom designed for your group.

Physiology with an Altitude
Discover how altitude affects the body through hands-on experiments. Students will learn about air pressure and exercise physiology while finding out about altitude illnesses and how to avoid them. Additional 4 hour field class may be arranged in Golden Gate Canyon State Park or nearby mountain site.

 Orienteering
Learn how to find you way with a topographic map and compass. Students will have an opportunity to hone their skills using paces to complete an orienteering course. Class activities may vary from simple compass skills to navigation or triangulation.

 Colorado Weather: From the Mountains to the Plains
Gain awareness of Colorado's variable weather through observation, investigation and safety. Learn how cloud types, wind and topography provide clues about weather, and experiment with static electricity using a Van de Graff generator.

 Colorado Landscapes: From Mesas to Mountains
Bring earth science and geography to life through an experiential, outdoor field trip. Participants will learn about Colorado's unique topography, geology and natural history while hiking up South Table Mountain or other local field sites. Additional hands-on activities may include ecology observation games, topographic map reading, rock identification and an overview of Denver's geologic timeline.

 Conserve Our Mountains, Conserve Our Neighborhoods
Recognize human impacts on the environment and develop an appreciation for living things through a variety of observation and Leave No Trace activities along the Clear Creek Trail in Golden. Activities vary for grade levels. Activity topics may include raw materials, trash decomposition, and wildlife habitat.

 Mountain Safety
Learn the 10 essentials, and the required skills and equipment needed for your next
outdoor adventure! Hands-on classroom and outdoor activities may include: map and compass, wildlife safety, weather, Leave No Trace, and first aid. Activity focus can be
catered to groups' interest.

Slacklining: Balance and Movement
Slacklining combines the individual challenge of walking a tightened rope with the group dynamics of spotting by teammates to create a safe physical challenge. Slacklining is a great cross trainer for any sport with the ability to increase reaction time through the connection between the mind and the body. In addition to slacklining, students will participate in other activities that test and improve physical balance and coordination. These activities meet the new Colorado State Standards.
Age: Program can be structured to include all classes and grades in a school.
Class length: 1- 2 hours
Fee: $150 first hour; $50 each additional hour; 1 chaperone per 15 students may attend free

 Watershed Science
Discover how Colorado's mountains are a source of water for the Front Range through hands-on activities. Students will map their watershed, inventory water users, and recognize how land use affects water quality. Class includes water quality experiments along Clear Creek.
