Alpine Scrambling Course

Alpine Scrambling is defined as unroped climbing over mountainous terrain. The CMC Denver Group’s Alpine Scrambling Course (DEN ASC) consists of self-study material via google classroom, 2 online weekday evening lectures, 1 in-person meet up (weekday evening), snow travel clinic, and 3 progressive field days.

Tuition:  $165.00

Course Prerequisites:

  1. PREREQUISITE: Completion of the CMC class Wilderness Trekking School (WTS) or equivalent
  2. FITNESS REQUIREMENT: Recent hiking completed at distances/elevation gain of 12-15 miles and 2500-3500 feet gain (this was the Denver C Hiker Classification)
  3. REQUIRED GEAR: Helmet, Ice Ax, Climbing Harness, 2 Circular Runners, 2 Locking Carabineers, lugged sole hiking boots
  4. TECHNOLOGY: Majority of Course Material are delivered online via Google Classroom  and attendance of online meeting via Zoom requiring full computer screen.

Note: This is a two-step process: Enrollment is by application. The APPLICATION Button (on the Right side of this screen) will become active March 1, 2023 @ 6am. SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION AND WAIT TO HEAR OF YOUR ACCEPTANCE BEFORE ENROLLMENT.  DO NOT ENROLL UNTILL YOU HAVE RECIEVED EMAIL NOTICE OF ACCEPTANCE. You must enroll/pay tuition at the course on the CMC website.

This course is for CMC members only.  Membership must be current through the end date of course (August 31st) to register for this course.

Process/Important Dates: 

  • March:
    • March 1, 2023 Application Process begins (Note: Class has filled quickly in the past, sometimes by mid-March)
  • April:
    • Student Welcome Letters will be sent via email
    • Waitlisted students will be informed of their status
    • Look for DEN ASC students and instructors only Bonus Fitness Hikes on CMC calendar
  • May:
    • May 1, 2023 Google Classroom self-study materials opens
    • May 4, 2023 Online Student Lecture #1 (via Zoom)
    • May 11, 2023 Online Student Lecture #2 (via Zoom)
    • May 22, 2023 in person Meet Up
    • May 5, 6, or 7 - Snow Travel Clinic options - students must be able to attend one of these dates (backup dates will be the following weekend May 12, 13, 14)
    • Look for DEN ASC students and instructors only Bonus Fitness Hikes on CMC calendar
  • June and July:
    • June 3 & 4 - Field Day 1: Student Skills Field Day options - students must be able to attend one of these dates (backup dates will be the following weekend June 10 & 11)
    • Student Scramble Field Days are progressive and held in June and July … check CMC calendar (students must complete classroom self-study and both field days prior to joining any of the Scrambles)
      • Level #1 Scramble Field Day (Friday/weekend options in June)
      • Level #2: Scramble Field Day (Friday/weekend options in June/July)
