CMC Member Identified as Kelso Mountain Avalanche Victim

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015

Colorado Mountain Club member Christopher Thomas was identified as the victim of the Dec. 31 avalanche on Kelso Mountain.

Thomas, 39, joined the CMC's Pikes Peak Group in 2011. He was a military veteran, a mountain guide and an accomplished climber, with summits of Denali, Mt. Rainier and nearly 20 Colorado 14ers to his credit. He is survived by his wife, Melissa, also a CMC member.

Thomas was hiking up the trail toward 14ers Grays and Torreys peaks with two other climbers when a slide released from above on Kelso Mountain and buried him. He was wearing an avalanche beacon, but by the time his partners reached him about 20 minutes later he was unresponsive. For more details, please read the Colorado Avalanche Information Center’s preliminary accident report. The trip was not an official CMC-led hike.

The Colorado Springs Gazette published a memorial article with more details about Thomas' life.

The CMC expresses its deepest sympathies to Thomas’ friends, family and climbing partners.
