Canoe & Hike the Canyons of the Colorado River - Hosted by Centennial Canoe Outfitters

Canoe and hike along the Colorado River as it cuts throughtowering red sandstone canyons deposited over 260 million years ago. Geologists travel from all over the world to see these magnificent rock formations. Roads do not bound this portion of the river, and the canyons are accessible only from the river, giving the area a true wilderness setting. Earth Science teacher, Ed Adams, will be available to answer your questions and point out interesting gelogical mysteries. There may be time along the way for hiking into the canyons, swimming in the cool river, or simply relaxing on its banks. Interesting side trips into deep box canyons will leave you awed by the immensity of geologic time and the silence of the wilderness. A special treat includes paddling through two billion year-old sculted metamorphic rock. No prior canoeing or camping experience required. River is suitable for beginner paddlers. Video:

Alta Via 1, 3 and 4 in the Italian Dolomites

The Dolomites are in the northeast corner of Italy, close to the Austrian border. From the American point of view, the Dolomites are perhaps Europe's most underappreciated mountain range. Despite their proximity to tourist-thronged Venice, not many Americans visit. Too bad. These ramparts of white and pink limestone thrusting up to 10,000 feet from rolling green meadows are more dramatic and esthetic (albeit smaller) than the familiar movie-logo snow-capped peaks of the Alps just to the north. Three-thousand-foot walls attract hard-core rock climbers, while energetic hikers tread a vast network of superb foot trails serviced by a system of rifugios—overnight huts that are really more like small basic hotels, with food, wine, heat, electric lights, bunks, many with hot showers and sometimes even private rooms. The rifugios allow a hiker carrying only a modest pack to stay out on the trail for days or even weeks at a time—an outdoor luxury virtually impossible on this side of the Atlantic.

Date: August 24 - September 9, 2018   Price: From $2853
