Trip Overview

The Ancients Ruin Bike & Hike Adventure is 6 days mountain bike riding, hiking and camping through the heart of Anasazi country in the Cedar Mesa region of S.E. Utah. This vehicle supported adventure takes you across Cedar Mesa and the "Trail of the Ancients" and deep into canyons with numerous side trips to spectacular but little known Ancient Puebloan ruins.

Most of the riding is on moderately rough dirt roads, perfect for mountain bikes, and the side hikes are short but challenging and afford a unique glimpse into the mysterious Anasazi way of life that flourished in the area over 900 years ago.

Cycling distances range from 7 to 25 miles a day (with a total of approx.. 85 miles) and are moderate in difficulty, as we traverse an area of high plateaus and deep canyons pocketed with ruins and artifacts. The hiking will be moderately technical with sections of scrambling similar to class 3 mountain scrambling with only a few miles on trails ranging from 5 – 10 miles per day (with a total of approx.. 30 miles.)

Although the emphasis on this adventure is hiking to explore Ancient Puebloan ruins and art, bicycling will be your mode of transport to each trailhead where we will leave the bikes and begin the hiking. This is participatory trip where participants will be asked to help pack the truck and assist in cooking and cleaning.

Space is limited by the gear carrying capacity of the truck and to those fit enough to enjoy the journey. Included: Support vehicle, food (5 Breakfasts, 5 lunches, 5 dinners), water, fuel, all group camping & cooking equipment, camp chairs, museum entrance, permit fees, and experienced guides. Not included: Transportation to Moab, bike & personal camping equipment.

Activities / Difficulty

Need C Level hikers with mountain biking experience for long days of both riding (up to 30 miles) and hiking (up to 8 miles) in the same day. There will be some scrambling and hiking on uneven ground with most hiking Class 2 with some limited Class 3. (We will have webbing or rope as needed.) Stamina is more important than bike skill but comfort on rough roads is necessary. There is no single track riding on this trip. It can get quite hot however and our days will be long 6-9 hours of moving by bike or hike with long lunch breaks.

Trip Leader: Rick & Deana Pratt

Rick and Deana can hike all day at mountain top elevation and ski 30-35 days a year. Rick goes canyoneering 10, hikes 15, bike another 20 and rock climb another 20 days. Rick has climbed Pico do Orizaba (18,000’) in Mexico. Deana works out at her gym 5 days a week for 90 minutes and plays hard with Rick on the weekends and can keep up with him if ropes are not included. We also both sea kayak a few days a year.

In addition to Yellowstone in Winter for 3 year that Rick & Deana both led. Rick has led trips outside the CMC for 30 years including 27 years of mountain biking, hiking and 10 years of canyoneering trips in S.E. Utah. The only “official” CMC AT trip is the Moab trip called the MMBHA. I am approved to lead Class C, hikes, snow shoe & top rope trips.Deana usually accompanies Rick on these excursions and has recently taken the Avalanche Awareness class.
