Trip Overview

With its impressive collection of archaeological treasures and prolific displays of rock art, the 27 Enjoying San Juan River Hikesriver miles from Sand Island to Mexican Hat provide multiple options for extended hiking away from the river. Cliff dwellings and gorgeous Ancestral Puebloan rock art are on prominent display in the San Juan River canyon. Many centuries later, gold miners, explorers and river-running pioneers added an Old West flavor to the San Juan’s history.
