Trip Overview

The Graubünden is in the eastern part of Switzerland borders Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. 3 languages are spoken in the area, Swiss German being the predominant. The area is where the Romansh originates from, and it is used in addition to Italian. The typical architecture of Pontresina (St. Moritz and Davos, too) is characteristic of the area. The houses, called chesas, are stenciled outside. The train line we will use to get there encompasses the Albula Line, considered a Unesco Heritage site in addition to the Bernina Highway. There are various glaciers in the area and we will hike towards two of them, as well as arrive to another via cable cars.

The Jungfrau Hoch area is considered the most beautiful area in Switzerland (hard to say) and we will travel through Interlaken (possible to get into a boat and cross the lake). The beauty of the waterfalls in Lauterbrunnen Valley, the magnificent views of the Eiger North face, the trains up the Jungfrau Hoch (the top of Europe) and the ridge hikes in the area make it an international touristic attraction. The Bernese Alps views include the Eiger, The Mönch and the Jungfrau, and we will go to Kleine Scheidegg, one of the most visited mountain areas in Switzerland.

At this time of the year, we should be able to see magnificent flowers.

Type of activity/level of activity: This is a Difficult A trip/Easy B trip

Maximum number of participants: 10

Accommodations: 10 nights in 4 star hotels, all meals included after dinner on July 5th 2017 and ending with breakfast on July 15th, 2017.

Skills and Training requirements: participants have to like day hiking, must be able to do minor water crossings on rocks, and cannot be afraid of ridge walks. The trails are established and safe, but one hikes looking at wide-open spaces. In addition, we will use trams, trains and cable cars to reach the heights. If a person does not wish to hike, they can easily do sightseeing by train, etc. There are innumerous activities, from paragliding to a town swimming pool (plus an excellent spa in Pontresina) that they can choose to entertain themselves.

Pre-trip activities: There will be one meeting at CMC prior to this trip. I will try to arrange for hikes with the group beforehand.

Trip leader: M. Beatriz Silveira

M. Beatriz Silveira MD has been a leader at CMC for over 15 years. She has travelled extensively over this world, both in hiking trips and cultural excursions and, as of lately, as a solo traveller. She worked as a Board Certified ENT physician and after her retirement, she obtained a Fellowship in Wilderness Medicine. After her retirement, she has dedicated a large part of her time to traveling, be it in cross-country ski trips to Switzerland or hiking extensively in Europe, Nepal and South America. In Colorado she enjoys hiking, snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, classical music concerts, theater and taking classes at CU! She has taught multiple classes at CMC, in Wilderness First Aid as well as CPR. Being fluent in 5 languages and having lived overseas in her youth have given her a great appreciation for the ways of the world, which she is happy to share with all CMC members.
