Trip Overview

The Yorkshire Dales and Lake District Trek follows a long distance footpath of about 80 miles that passes along mostly riverside paths and through two national parks: Yorkshire Dales National Park and Lake District National Park. The walk is full of diversity, beginning with lush meadows and black-bordered moors of the Yorkshire Dales, to the shore of England's grandest lake, Lake Windermere, in the Lake District. It is a remarkably beautiful walk through some of England’s finest scenery. The walking is relatively gentle (with some long days) and affords the opportunity to interact with locals along the way and to experience rural England’s hospitality at its best.

Our trip begins with some time in London where we explore some off-the-beaten-path areas. Hampstead Heath, in the north of London, is a large park surrounded by charming neighborhoods that once claimed Aldus Huxley, George Orwell and John Keats among its residents. We’ll take a long walk through the park and take in one of the best views over London. Following lunch at the famous Spaniard’s Inn, we’ll enjoy a private tour of Highgate Cemetery—Victorian cemetery architecture at its finest—and visit the burial places of such notables as Karl Marx and Douglas Adams.

From London, we’ll travel by train to Bath where we can tour the Roman baths. We’ll take a half-day visit out to magical Stonehenge—one of the most intriguing places on Earth. After our brief visit in Bath, we’ll head up to the north of England to start our trek.

We’ll walk through the gorgeous Yorkshire Dales and Lake District countryside for 7 days, staying at iconic bed and breakfasts, small hotels and guesthouses along the way. And at the end of each day’s walk, we can reward ourselves with some local ales from the nearby pubs. At the end of our trek we’ll head back to London where we say our goodbyes.

This trip starts and ends in London, England. Due to the limited availability of our selected accommodations, space is limited on this trip and CMC members are encouraged to sign up quickly!

Mostly 3- and 4-star hotels; bed and breakfasts and small guest houses. It may be necessary to split the group between two accommodations in some of the small villages. NOTE: we will change accommodations nearly every day of this trip. Packing light is essential! Leaders will provide suggested packing list to registered participants.

Activities / Difficulty

B- and C-level hiking on trek, at a moderate pace of approximately 2-3 miles/hour. Terrain includes: dirt paths, quiet country roads (some gravel, some asphalt), village/city streets and sidewalks. Please NOTE that there are many short (property- or field-boundary) walls that have to be climbed over, generally by stiles, steps, or steps with gates. Crossing from field to field often requires moving through gates or across bridges.

Be willing and able to walk without stress or complaint for up to 6 hours a day over a variety of terrain and with some short but steep climbs/descents. Daily distance is from 2-5 miles in London and 6-16 miles on the trek. Note that the terrain is remote, rugged and challenging.

Recommended training: walk/hike as much as you can prior to the trip.
