The Lion Gulch Trail(No. 949)generally follows the gulch up to the meadows, crossing the stream nine times. This trail ends at an area called Homestead Meadows. Homestead Meadows, where the U.S. Forest Service has preserved the remains of eight homestead buildings that were built between 1889 and 1923. Most of them were abandoned during the Great Depression. This area is adjacent to the 2002 Big Elk fire which burned 1.200 acres. The 2-man crew of an airtanker was killed in a crash fighting this fire.
