This spring climb begins on CO 14, 2.5 miles west of Cameron Pass at the turnoff to Lake Agnes and American Lakes trailheads. We will snowshoe down into the Michigan River Valley, then ascend gentle to moderate slopes to treeline below Lulu Mountain. From there, we will choose a safe off trail route to Thunder Pass at 11,331'. Weather and avalanche conditions permitting, we will then ascend the normally snow-free Class 2 west ridge leading to the summit of Lulu Mountain at 12, 228’, where astounding snowy views of the Never Summer, Rawah and Front Ranges will hopefully be displayed. We would have a reasonable chance of seeing a band of hearty bighorn sheep that often winters near the summit of Lulu Mountain. We would descend back to Thunder Pass, then after passing by Lower Michigan Lake, descend steep, timbered terrain back into the dramatic northeast cirque of the Nokhu Crags, and continue down into the Michigan River Valley. Participants should be strong snowshoers/hikers prepared for severe winter conditions and deep snow. Must register directly with trip leader, Ward Whicker, by email ward.whicker@colostate.edu; or phone: 970-225-3747. Co-leader: Steve Martin, email falconridge@cowisp.net; phone 970-215-4725.
