Join us on an exciting loop trip that begins by ascending the southern aspects of McGregor Mountain and ends at the Gem Lake/Twin Owls Trailhead off Devils Gulch Road. The trip requires a simple car shuttle, and takes in remarkable scenery and topographic diversity. We’ll start near the Fall River Visitor’s Center of Rocky Mountain National Park where we’ll go up the steep terrain on McGregor’s southwestern slope, working our way around cliff bands to reach the wonderful summit where views of the park’s nearby lower peaks give special perspective to the lofty mountains along the Continental Divide as seen from this vantage. If weather allows good visibility, you will always recall the vistas you’ll experience from McGregor’s top! The last time we offered this trip was in March 2009, when 19 CMC members shared this special viewing experience under marvelous conditions. After lunch on the summit we’ll descend on the mountain’s north side toward its saddle with Dark Mountain. Once reaching the Dark Canyon Trail, we’ll follow it back along the southern cliffs of Lumpy Ridge past the old MacGregor Ranch Trailhead to the newer trailhead parking area farther east. If we have time on the way out, we’ll drop down to McGregor Falls for a brief stop. Count on a long outing to complete this loop. Drive distance from Fort Collins 90 miles. Trail mileage 8. Elevation gain 2600 feet. Suggested rideshare $10. Register by e-mail with co-leaders Steve Martin,, Laura Hinds,, or Bob Dietz , Sign-ups on the CMC State website will not be seen by the co-leaders, so make certain you contact them directly by e-mail.
