Details

This is a joint event (SM-DN). On Saturday  we will hike up Mt Princeton from the 11,000 foot camp grounds (6 miles round trip gain 3,197) and then break camp and 4 wheel drive up FR 277 to 11,000 on Mt Antero and car camp.   On Sunday climb Antero (10 mi round trip/3200' gain) and return home.  Mt. Antero is the 10th highest and Princeton is the 18th highest amoung the Fourteeners. Of interest, the south slope of Princeton drops abruptly in an escarpment known as the Chalk Cliffs, composed of white quartz monzonite. The higher altitudes of Antero was rich in mining activities, first discovered in 1884. This mine produced high quality crystals of blue aquamarine as well as other highly-prized minerals. In 1949 a bronze tablet was placed on Antero declaring the site Mount Antero Mineral Park, making Mt Antero the highest mineral locality in North America.
