Details

The plan is to try one of several possible longer ski tours on the west side of Cameron Pass (7 Utes Mtn, Lake Agnes Bowl, Nokhu Bowl), depending on weather, snowpack, and avalanche conditions. Bring AT or tele gear with climbing skins. You should be prepared to ski 30-35 degree slopes in trees with variable backcountry snow conditions and terrain hazards. - GUIDELINES FOR DIFFICULT BACKCOUNTRY SKI TOURS - FITNESS LEVEL: You can skin up 800 feet elevation gain per hour on an established track for 3 hours with occasional breaks. SKIING ABILITY: You can ski Black runs at ski areas with reasonable confidence. You can make linked turns in powder, but difficult snow types - heavy wet snow, hard crusts, poor visibility, or steep slopes may cause problems, though you can cope with them. AVALANCHE TRAINING: Completion of a level 1 avalanche course or equivalent training and avalanche gear (beacon, shovel, probe) are required. Contact: John Raich, jraich@lamar.colostate.edu. E-mail inquiries preferred.
