This is the most spectacular of the four Bear Creeks in the San Juan Mts. Although the creek bottom is far too rugged to follow, miners during the 19th century constructed a trail into the upper reaches of the drainage.  They built one of the most improbable mountain trails in Colorado and it is designated as a National Recreation Trail.  From the trailhead, the Bear Creek Trail crosses over the road by way of the top of the tunnel.  It then begins climbing up a series of moderate to strenuous steep switchbacks along the east wall of the Uncompahgre Gorge. The trail crosses a talus slope, then traverses the first of many precipitous ledges.  It climbs more switchbacks before leveling off having ascended 800 ft. in the first 1.5 miles. After another mile you will come to the old Grizzly Mine. Beyond the Grizzly Mine the trail continues along the north wall of the canyon until it reaches a creek bottom about 3 miles from the trailhead. Another mile of up and you reach the Yellow Jacket mine and the turnaround.

This is an exploratory hike - neither Dave or I have hiked this trail.

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
