Location

Wednesday Evening Social Hikes rotate among the wide variety of trails near Boulder, in the surrounding foothills.

The exact path taken is decided by the leader (sometimes with input from the group) on the evening of the hike.  That choice is influenced by the time of year (the amount of daylight remaining in the evening), the weather, and the last-minute whims and preferences of the leader and hikers.   The trails are A-B level hikes, of relatively short duration so as to fit within the evening, and range from Easy to Moderate in difficulty.  The elevation gains also vary, from on-the-flat with mild rises, to steeper grades typical of the foothills.  None of the hikes are technical in nature, and all are within the abilities of a moderately fit hiker.

EACH
PERSON IS EXPECTED TO BRING WATER, RAIN PROTECTION, HEADLAMP OR FLASHLIGHT,
SNACKS, AND STURDY FOOTWEAR AND APPROPRIATE CLOTHING FOR EVENING WEATHER!

This outing is meant for casual hikers who enjoy each others’ company,
talking along the trail, taking pictures, and sharing snacks along the way.

This 'social hike' is taken at a casual-to-moderate pace along one of
many local Boulder foothills trails.
Some hikes or portions of hikes will be a more challenging as we climb
trails up into the foothills, but nobody is left behind.  Our hikers
always wait at trail junctions to ensure everyone is with the group.

Typically, we'll stop for a shared snack break and moment of silence somewhere with
a view.  Most evenings find us finishing
the hike anywhere from 8:00pm to 9:00pm -- though occasionally (and especially
on full-moon nights) we may stay out a little longer, so as to enjoy hiking
down moonlit trails.

The group will often repair to a nearby local restaurant (often, Tsing
Tao) for an optional after-hike dinner and drinks together (which is always a good time
for everyone) so plan your evening to join us if you can.

Notes

Due to the flooding and re-construction in Boulder, most of the Open Space trails are still closed.  The few still open are no doubt very crowded, and sometimes hard to reach by road.  Plus, being the last WEE hike of the year, and with a potluck planned to celebrate the event afterward, and with the sunset is earlier than ever, someplace close and short was called for.  We therefore did a little research and decided to use the rough circumstances as an excuse to go somewhere for which we would never normally opt. This hike ended up on the East Boulder Trail at the Teller Farm, on the East side of Boulder.  Though not hiking IN the mountains, it gave us a beautiful view OF the mountains that we don't often get, and the trail was in good condition.  We took a faster pace than usual, to make the most of our short evening time, and everyone seemed to really enjoy it and appreciate being able to get out at all!  Getting together with everyone was especially nice after the flooding; LOTS of trading 'flooded basement' stories.
