Details

The Pawnee National Grasslands has witnessed a riveting and significant pageant of prehistory, history, the frontier, the tragedy of the Dust Bowl.  The restoration, modern agriculture philosophy and so much more. The area is rich in artifact evidence of it's past. Cultural resources include ruins, pictographs, petroglyphs, pottery and arrow points to name a few. It's past indicates it was and still is replete in fauna and flora, especially the vital grasses. New settlers had to learn from past mistakes that there has to be a symbiosis between man and the ecosystem for both to survive. The colorful, riveting drama of this area influenced the renowned author James Michener to devote the whole first chapter of his world famous book Centennial to the land we know today as the Pawnee National Grassland. This book about Colorado was later made into an Academy Awarded film.
