John Raich,

TRIP OUTLINE: Recent new snow in the northern Colorado mountains provides good conditions for powder skiing. We'll choose one of several possible ski tours in the Cameron Pass area (Sawmill Ck, Montgomery Pass, N Diamond Pk, Nokhu Bowl, Agnes Bowl, 7 Utes Mtn), depending on weather, snowpack, and avalanche conditions. Bring AT or tele backcountry ski gear with climbing skins. GUIDELINES FOR ADVANCED SKI TOURS FITNESS: You should be able to skin up about 800 feet per hour elevation gain, for 3 hours with short rest breaks every hour or so. A 5 hour day of climbing and skiing shouldn't be exhausting for you. You should be prepared to break trail for short portions of the ski tour. SKIING ABILITY: You should be able to ski all but extreme Black Diamond runs at ski areas with reasonable confidence and with only occasional falls. You should be able to put down linked turns in untracked powder on slopes with widely spaced trees. More difficult snow conditions such as hard crust, cement snow, and spring snow conditions may cause problems but you can cope with them at a slower pace. AVALANCHE TRAINING: Completion of a level 1 avalanche course and avalanche gear (beacon, probe, shovel) are required. E-mail inquiries preferred: John Raich,
