On the Continental Divide at Milner Pass, take the Mt. Ida Trail to Mt. Ida 12,880' followed with a scramble to Chief Cheley Peak 12,804' that towers over Highest Lake, the highest lake of the Gorge Lakes. Then circling around the top of the cirque containing the glacial Highest Lake will take you to Cracktop 12,760', which lives up to its name with its conspicuous huge crack as seen from Trail Ridge Road. Maneuver the knife ridge to Mt. Julian 12,927' and then continue for almost a mile on the ridge to Terra Tomah Mtn 12,718'. These peaks tower over the stunning Gorge Lakes and the grand Forest Canyon, harboring the headwaters of the Big Thompson River. Plan for rock scrambling, exposure, and knife edges on a long rewarding day.
