Details

The backpacking approach to camp is via the Lake Charles trail. Take the left fork at the TH. The trail to Lake Charles gains 1,800' in 4 miles and will take about 2.5 hours. We will set up a backcountry camp near the lake. An alternative is to continue up the valley towards Mystic Island Lake for our camp.

From the W end of Lake Charles, climb off-trail through timber and around small cliffs to the start of the N ridge at 11,850'. Start climbing the N ridge. The scrambling is delightful on solid quartzite rock, never exceeding class 3. At 12,450', the ridge changes, steepening to a point above a deep notch. To avoid the steep drop, find a ramp that spirals around this point to the right and gets you down into the notch. From there, climb the final 600' headwall, some of the best quality scrambling you'll find in Colorado. With careful route finding, you should be able to keep the scrambling to class 3. Work your way up this wall to the summit. Participant should be comfortable with moderate exposure. Leaders will provide rope belays if and when deemed necessary.

The descent follows the W ridge to a saddle. Then descend into the cirque to the SW of the summit. This descent may involve talus, scree, and loose rock. Find your way down through timber and small cliffs to the camp. Pack up camp and return to the TH via the Lake Charles trail.

Gear needed: Mountaineering boots, helmet, mountaineering clothing including rain gear, emergency or commercial climbing harness, locking carabiner, shoulder length sling, camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, pad, stove, cooking and eating utensils, water filter or water purifier, water container, food for 2 lunches, 1 dinner, 1 breakfast). Participants should be self sufficient in regard to camping gear unless they make prior arrangements to share gear.
