Craig Lewis,

Alpine Scrambling Course field trips subsequent to the first field trip, the Basic Skills Session, are scheduled by individual instructors on dates and climbing objectives selected by them during summer 2013. Those field trips are listed in the CMC activity schedule and described there. Students should register for at least three additional field trips beyond the initial session using the CMC trip scheduling system. Students can choose those field trips that are most appropriate for them. Instructors will place enrollment limits on field trips. Hence, it is important to sign up early to ensure a spot in the three field trips that you are most interested in.

This field trip will climb Mt Audubon via its SE ridge, rated class 3. This short ridge forms the south edge of a small east-facing cirque 0.5 miles east of the summit of Audubon. From the Mitchell Lake TH at 10,500', follow the Mitchell  Lake trail 1 mile to Mitchell Lake. Hike NW 0.5 mile into the basin below the small E-facing cirque, then hike W onto the crest of the SE ridge. Follow the ridge W. Descend a devious, steep, and exposed class 3 rock pitch down into the notch. Climb up a nifty class 3 rock wall to the broad open slopes above at 12,600' and on to the summit.

We will then descend W to the 12,600ft saddle between Audubon and Paiute and ascend Paiute via its E ridge. This ridge has some minor class 3 scrambling towards the top and is rated as a Classic in Roach's guide book.

We will descend Paiute via its SE face route towards Blue Lake, which may offer the opportunity for a glissade, and then pick up the Mitchell Lake trail to return to the trailhead.

The climb described here is one of several possible field trip options for ASC students

Bring helmet, ice axe,  mountaineering boots, snow gaiters, emergency or commercial climbing harness, a locking carabiner, and a shoulder-length sling. Instructors will bring gear to belay students over exposed sections, if deemed necessary.

Participation in this field trip is limited to ASC students and instructors who should sign up prior to Wednesday, July 10. After that, participation will be opened to qualified CMC members on a first come, first served basis, provided that there is room. CMC members not enrolled in ASC who are interested in participating should contact the designated trip leader. Route description: "Colorado's Indian Peaks" by Gerry Roach
