Craig Lewis -

Alpine Scrambling Course field trips subsequent to the first field trip, the Basic Skills Session, are scheduled by individual instructors on dates and climbing objectives selected by them during summer 2013. Those field trips are listed in the CMC activity schedule and described there. Students should register for at least three additional field trips beyond the initial session using the CMC trip scheduling system. Students can choose those field trips that are most appropriate for them. Instructors will place enrollment limits on field trips. Hence, it is important to sign up early to ensure a spot in the three field trips that you are most interested in.

We will leave on the Saturday afternoon and drive to the vicinity of Winfield where we will car camp. Early Sunday morning we will pack up camp and head up Ice Mountain returning to Denver on Sunday night.

The route starts from around 0.5 miles south of Winfield (or over 2 miles if we have enough 4WD vehicles) The mileage/elevation listed assumes starting at the 2WD trailhead.

Please let leader know if you have a 4WD vehicle. If we can start from the 4WD trailhead the route will be 8 miles/3300ft.

The approach follows the South Fork of Clear Creek, heads up into the upper basin between North Apostle and Ice Mountain and gains the N. Ridge around 13,400ft.

The ridge consists of exposed 3rd class scrambling, crosses a small, loose, exposed gully just before the summit and a final steep 4th class finish.

In addition to camping gear, food etc. for the Saturday night bring helmet, ice axe, mountaineering boots, snow gaiters, emergency or commercial climbing harness, a locking carabiner, and a shoulder-length sling.

Instructors will bring gear to belay students over exposed sections, if deemed necessary.

The climb described here is one of several possible field trip options for ASC students.

Participation in this field trip is limited to ASC students and instructors who should sign up prior to Friday, August 23rd. After that, participation will be opened to qualified CMC members on a first come, first served basis, provided that there is room. CMC members not enrolled in ASC who are interested in participating should contact the designated trip leader. Route description: "Colorado Scrambles" by Dave Cooper
