Details

Greyrock is a massive granitic intrusion that has weathered to its current rounded shape. The summit block provides popular rock climbing routes. The ascent route is a scrambling route, not the regular trail for the upper portion. This is one of several scrambling routes that were often led by Dan Gayton of the Fort Collins CMC Group.

Take the Greyrock trail up about 2 miles and 1,500' to a flat area. Watch for poison ivy along the trail although it is easily avoided. Leave the trail and hike the base of the dome on its SW side.

The scrambling route follows the SW nose of the dome. The scrambling is generally class 3 with occasional class 4 moves. Exposure along this route is moderate. The leader will provide a rope belay where appropriate.

Bring a helmet, a commercial climbing harness or an emergency harness made from a 48" sewn sling (appropriate for individuals with moderate girth) or an emergency harness fashioned from an appropriate length of 1 inch webbing, one locking carabiner. Hiking boots or approach shoes should be adequate.

Notes

Highway 14 up the Poudre Canyon has been re-opened. So there is access to the Greyrock trailhead. For additional information contact: John Raich, jraich@lamar.colostate.edu
