TRIP OVERVIEW: This is the first CMC trip to Turkey in many years and our first ever CMC trip to beautiful Bulgaria. The trip will offer a combination of hiking, cultural experiences, and a limited amount of technical mountaineering. The outing will offer the opportunity to climb the highest peak in both Turkey (Ararat) and Bulgaria (Musala) which is also the highest peak in the Balkans. The educational value of the trip is immense, with numerous historic sites from pre-Roman times; through the empires of Byzantium, Bulgaria, the Ottomans; to modern times.
TYPE OF ACTIVITY/LEVEL OF ACTIVITY: Strenuous hiking and some technical mountaineering, in addition to cultural touring. Mt. Ararat is comparable to a “D” hike. The top of Ararat is a snow climb requiring ice axe, crampons, roped travel skills; however, trekkers can skip the peak and enjoy the views from the high camp hut while the climbers do the summit. Musala is a difficult Class “B.” Note: the Denver Group hiker classification system does not apply to this trip. Prospective participants will be asked to provide a hiking resume.
ACCOMMODATIONS: Range from 3-star hotels to tent camping on Mt. Ararat.
SKILLS & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Ararat summit climbers must have ice axe, crampons, and roped travel skills. All participants must have excellent physical conditioning with screening by the trip leader.
PRE-TRIP ACTIVITIES: Required attendance at pre-trip meeting in March. Attendance at a majority of training hikes & climbs beginning in April (exception may be made for out-of-state participants at the discretion of the trip leader). Note: Leader must forward copies of participant passports in early June to the Turkish outfitter in order to secure Ararat climbing permits.
INCLUDED IN TRIP FEE: All ground transport, including airport transfers, in both countries. All lodging in Turkey, including hotels, camping; tents provided on Ararat. All meals on Turkey part of trip, excepting a lunch or two; guiding & mule transport on Ararat. All lodging & ground transport in Bulgaria. Breakfasts at hotels and one dinner. Also gratuities, some CMC leader reimbursement, contingency, CMC fee. All lodging is double occupancy.
NOT INCLUDED IN TRIP FEE: International air fare (coach fare approx. $1,250 to $1,850 as of 10/18/2013.) Also bag fees; travel/evacuation insurance; cost for any medical exams or medications; bar tab, including soft drinks; souvenir purchases; technical climbing gear; sleeping gear on Ararat; snacks; three lunches & two dinners in Bulgaria; museum entry fees in both countries; gondola cost on Musala; single supplement at any hotel.
Approximate cost per person: $2,265 – 2,420 (depending on leader air arrangements)
PAYMENT SCHEDULE: deposit of $500 is due upon approval by leader. Final payment is due by May 15, 2014.
Note: if less than 6 participants cost is approximate $2,720).
CANCELLATION POLICY: Cancellation 91 days (May 16) or more prior to departure: If a qualified, wait listed, person is available to take a vacated slot and pays all money due, all payments made by the cancelling party will be refunded, less a $50 processing fee. If no one is available to take a vacated slot, all money paid in will be refunded, less the $500 deposit.
Cancellation on Day 46 (June 30) up to Day 90 prior to departure: If a qualified, wait listed, person is available to take a vacated slot and pays all money due, all payments made by the
cancelling party will be refunded less a $50 processing fee. If no one is available to take a vacated slot, 1/3 of paid-in money will be refunded. If only the $500 deposit has been paid in, in this instance, then the deposit is not-refundable.
Cancellation 45 (July 1) or fewer days prior to departure: No refund will be made. At this time, passport copies will have been sent to obtain the required climbing permits for Ararat. In addition, bookings will have been confirmed and paid.
ALL PARTICIPANTS are strongly encouraged to purchase travel/cancellation/evacuation insurance.
