Quandary Peak
12/28 and 12/29/2013
This will likely be the last team training opportunity for the Orizaba Team before leaving for Mexico City on 1/11/14. This trip is a last hard group  effort and a great way to get your body acclimatized to 14,000'.
We will  ascend Quandary Peak (14,265') via the east slopes on 12/28, spend the night on the summit, and descend via the same route on 12/29. The route is 5 1/2 miles rt, with a summertime rating of class 1. Avalanche risk is low due to the low angle slopes, but snow is likely going to be deep at lower elevations. We'll start at the Monte Cristo Trailhead (10,900'), or as close to that as we can drive. We'll likely need flotation until achieving the ridge, where we can cache them or strap them on packs. Once on the ridge it's a steady but moderate ascent, most likely into a chilly wind. We'll set up tents on the summit and enjoy wonderful views of the Tenmile/Mosquito ranges, then (hopefully) a stunning display of the winter night sky.
It is likely to be cold and windy; a good chance to test your cold weather Orizaba gear and conditioning. Winter tents and zero degree bags (minimum) are required. This trip is intended primarily as a training excursion for the January Mexico Volcanoes trip. Consideration may be given to the 2nd Orizaba trip team, then to other CMC members if there is space available. Prospective participants must register with leader via email. No on-line registrations will be taken. To sign up, contact Tom Chapel (
