LEADER QUALIFICATIONS:  Tim has previously led over 20 Adventure Travel Trips for CMC and has completed over 10 backpacks in the Grand Canyon with 8 of these done as CMC Adventure Travel Trips. The planned route covers trails that Tim has hiked before.

TRIP DATES: April 17-24, 2014      

  

NUMBER OF DAYS:  8

 

TRIP OVERVIEW:  An 8-day adventure in Grand Canyon National Park, one of the world’s great natural wonders.  Drive to the park from Golden in a rental van, explore the south rim for one day, spend 5-days/4-nights backpacking in the back country, then return home

 

TYPE OF ACTIVITY/LEVEL OF ACTIVITY:  Dayhike and backpack

 

ACCOMMODATIONS: Nights 1 & 2: Hotel at Grand Canyon Village.  Nights 3-6: These nights will be during the backpack portion of the trip.  Night 7: Hotel in Moab, UT.  All hotel nights will be shared lodging (2 to a room).

 

SKILLS & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:  Participants must be experienced backpackers and able to hike up to 10 miles per day at a moderate pace. Most days will average 8 miles.  The climb out of the one mile-deep canyon will be done over two days, with an ascent of about 3,000 feet on the last day.  All hiking is on trail. Participants are responsible for preparing their own meals during the backpack.

 

PRE-TRIP ACTIVITIES:  Required pre-trip meeting a couple weeks before departure.  Organized conditioning hikes will start in March.

 

INCLUDED IN TRIP FEE:  Transportation between Golden and Grand Canyon National Park, 3 nights of lodging, park entrance fee, back country permit fee.

 

NOT INCLUDED IN TRIP FEE:  Meals (restaurant and camping meals) pay showers, and souvenirs

 

ITINERARY:

Day 1:  Depart early in the morning from Golden.  A full-size van will be rented.  Lunch at a restaurant along the way.  Arrive at Maswik Lodge in Grand Canyon Village in late afternoon.  Dinner at a nearby cafeteria or restaurant.

 


Day 2:  Explore the south rim area and Grand Canyon Village.  Participants may go on their own today or join the group for a dayhike on the rim.

 


Days 3 thru 7:  Backpack for 5 days/4 nights.  The Park Service has approved the back country permit for a route that uses the main corridor trails of South Kaibab, North Kaibab, and Bright Angel.

 


The hiking route will begin and end on the south rim. To ease the climb out of the canyon, the return to the rim will be done over two days.  All hiking will be on trail, and designated campgrounds will be used.  Optional opportunities for additional exploration after reaching each day’s campground.

 


Day 7:  After completing the backpack and hiking out of the canyon, visit the public shower facility inside Grand Canyon Village.  Then begin the drive home.  Spend the night at a hotel along the way, probably in Moab, Utah.  Dinner at a restaurant.

 


Day 8:  Finish the drive home, arriving in Golden in the afternoon.&am


Notes

CANCELLATION POLICY: If CMC or the Trip Leader cancels trip: All money paid ($498) will be refunded, including the deposit.

If Participant cancels from trip:

*  On or before April 1:  Refund of $423  (Payment less the $75 nonrefundable portion)

 

*  After April 1:  No refund.  However, if a qualified substitute can be found, refund of $423 (Payment less the $75 nonrefundable portion)


ALL PARTICIPANTS are strongly encouraged to purchase travel/cancellation/evacuation insurance.
