This trip is intended to summit the highest peak in New Mexico, Wheeler Peak, which stands at 13,161'.  The plan is to take the newly improved summit trail from Williams Lake. I have never done this peak before, but it looks very scenic and it would be nice to do some hiking in New Mexico.

We will carpool from the wooly mammoth lot down to Taos on Saturday, backpack in to the Williams Lake area (about 2 miles) and camp for the night.  On sunday morning we will attempt the summit early, return to break camp, and backpack out to the trailhead again.  On saturday, expect to backpack for 2 miles and gain 1000'.  On sunday, we will hike for 2 miles and 2000' of vertical to the summit, descend the same way for 2 miles, and backpack 2 miles to the trailhead.  After returning to the trailhead, we will grab some food and head back to Colorado, returning sunday night.

For this trip you will need to be in good enough shape to carry your overnight gear (tent, sleeping bag, food, etc.) to the Williams Lake area and hike the 2000 feet in 2 miles to the summit.  Water can be filtered from the lake as needed.

Members from Colorado Springs or other areas are welcome as well, as long as you can meet us along the way or at the trailhead.
