**There are two separate Sessions for the Basic Rock Climbing Seminar (BRCS). Session A is the week of May 27th- June 1st; Session B is the week of June 10th - 15th. Please sign up for the Session that fits your schedule best. Sessions A & B are listed separately on the CMC Calendar.**

Basic Rock Climbing Seminar (BRCS) is our introductory climbing course-we teach the basics of safe rock climbing. BRCS is great for the first-time climber, the more experienced climber looking to learn a bit more, and those who haven't climbed in a few years looking for a refresher. BRCS focuses on climbing safety: equipment (and using it properly), communication, belaying, lowering, and rappelling. But, of course, no climbing course would be complete without learning how to actually climb--you'll get that in BRCS, too.

In two indoor evenings and two outdoor days, you'll have plenty of opportunities to learn, practice, and climb in a fun and social setting. And you'll meet plenty of other new climbers, too. But don't wait until it's too late. We can only take 25 students in each Session of BRCS, so sign up today.

For more information, contact Bill Haneghan, at

May 27th - June 1st:
-Tuesday May 27th, 6:00pm-9:00pm, Indoors at CMC*
-Thursday May 29th, 6:00pm-9:00pm, Indoors at CMC*
-Saturday May 31st, early morning until mid-afternoon, outdoors
-Sunday June 1st, early morning until mid-afternoon, outdoors
-Sunday June 1st, Picnic immediately afterwards at the trailhead, afternoon until early evening.

*Important skills are taught during the evening classes; failure to attend these classes will prohibit the student from attending the field days.

Q: What might I learn in this class?
A: You will have the opportunity to learn the basic safety concepts of technical (roped) rock climbing: equipment, donning a harness, tying-in to the climbing rope, communication, belaying, lowering a climber, and rappelling. You will also have the opportunity to learn climbing techniques from our cadre of experienced rock climbing Instructors.

Q: What is the cost of the class?
A: Tuition for BRCS is only $85.00 for the 2 evenings and 2 field days of instruction. As a volunteer organization our costs are artificially low.

Q: Are there any prerequisites for this course?
A: There are no prerequisites for BRCS. Only a modicum of fitness (be able to hike a mile or so to the crag) and a desire to learn to climb.

Q: Is there any Required gear?
A: There is no required gear for BRCS, other than clothes which are appropriate for the weather in the mountains in June, and which will be comfortable to climb in. We recommend shoes/hiking boots that are comfortable for the ~1 mile hike in to the crag. Rock climbing shoes are also recommended (see below). We will provide all other necessary equipment.

Q: What skills will I practice in this class?
A: Indoor Night #1 - 6-9pm: Climbing vocabulary & communication, equipment & usage, tying-in, belaying, climbing.
Indoor Night #2 - 6-9pm: Climbing technique, vocabulary, tying-in, communication, belaying, climbing, rappelling.
Field Days: You will use all of these skills while climbing, belaying, and rappelling.

Q: What books are good on the subject of rock climbing?
A: Craig Luebben's "Rock Climbing: Mastering Basic Skills" is a good basic book. Purchase it now at a 20% discount from the CMC.

Q: What skills can I practice prior to class?
A: Knots: Fig8 Retrace, Barrel Knot, Autoblock
