Details

Take the Red Mountain Trail to the Grand Ditch Road; then take the Hitchens Gulch Trail parallel to Big Dutch Creek. The latter part of the route involves off trail boulder hopping to ascend to a glacier plateau where this impressive lake is nestled. This area is known for its showy subalpine flowers including Parry Primrose, mertensias, etc. Of historic interest is Dutchtown which used to exist at the upper part of the Hitchens Gulch Trail. The settlers of Lulu City threw out the German miners, called Dutchmen, after creating massive damage and injury following a night of inebriation in Grand Lake. These obstreperous miscreants after being forced out by the townspeople established their settlement two miles above on Big Dutch Creek.

Notes

Please note that this is a casual hike and not goal imperative.  We will defer to the ability of the slower hikers.  If this is not the type of hike you are interested in, please find another trip to your liking.
