Linda and David Ditchkus
Linda has been a member of the Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) for nearly 20 years and spends as much time as possible in the Rocky Mountains. When not enjoying our great state of Colorado, she travels to the mountains and historic sites of foreign countries. She has visited more than 50 countries and has trekked in many of those, including Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, Switzerland, and Vietnam.
Linda has led and co-led several CMC Adventure Travel Trips, whose destinations include: Scotland’s West Highland Way, trekking in Transylvania’s Southern Carpathian mountains, England’s Hadrian’s Wall Path trek, trekking in the Polish Tatra Mountains, and most recently a multi-sport winter trip in Canada’s French-speaking Quebec. While her trips typically focus on long-distance hiking and country high-points, she always includes events that allow exposure into the country’s culture. For example, touring museums and castles, or enjoying local cuisines and beverages.
In 2014, Linda will be co-leading two trips: The Best Hikes of Italy (with hiking in the Dolomites, the Lake District, and Cinque Terre) and the traditional Tour of Mont Blanc (100-mile circuit hike around Mt. Blanc – in Italy, Switzerland, and France).
May 13th – 26th, 2015
Number of Days:
Hike Scotland’s West Highland Way for 95 miles beside lochs, waterfalls, and craggy mountains in the Scottish Highlands. This famous route is walked by over 50,000 people each year, making it the most popular long distance walk in Scotland. The path uses ancient roads, including drovers’ roads, military roads and old coaching roads and we will walk the traditional route from south to north to the foot of Scotland’s (and the U.K.’s) highest peak, Ben Nevis. The group will attempt a climb to the summit of “the Ben” (4,409 feet), weather permitting. While hiking will be the trip’s focus, the group will also tour medieval Edinburgh, Stirling (famous for being the home of William Wallace), the Eliean Donan Castle in the Scottish Highlands, and a Scotch distillery.
Type of Activity/Level of Activity:
This trip includes 10 days of hiking, and only fit participants will be accepted on the trip. The West Highland Way will take nine days hiking from village-to-village in the Scottish Highlands, with distances ranging from 7 to 16 miles per day. The final day of hiking will be an attempt to climb Ben Nevis (Scotland and the U.K.’s highpoint). The peak attempt is 12 miles (roundtrip) on good trails to the 4,409 ft summit (about 4,300 feet of gain). This climb is straightforward and typically not difficult, but weather in the Scottish Highlands can change quickly and safe descent routes can become obscured in foggy conditions. Both leaders have experience climbing this peak.
