Drive out US 285 to Buena Vista, then US50 to Montrose, then turn south on US550 to Red Mountain Pass and down almost to Silverton. Drive into South Mineral Creek CG and the TH. Back pack into Lower Ice Lake Basin, about 3 miles and 1600 feet. Next day we can hike to Ice Lake and possibly scramble up Golden Horn or check out Island Lake and approach to Pilot Knob or Vermillion. The pace is moderate because I'm older. Been up there many times and climbed the peaks. Sunday, pack out and drive home. Gorgeous scenery and wild flowers. Also rain. Bring your own food.

To complete dthe trip: We packed up into lower basin and camped . Upper basin had a huge amount of snow and two large snow fields below Golden Horn Pk. John climbed it with ice ax, but 3 of us did not have an ax, so did not summit it. Sat night, it rained buckets, but the pack out was in dry weather. The drive home through So Park was slow. Good time was had by all 4 people.
