This trip will start at the Bear Lake parking lot and follow the established trail to Emerald Lake.  From there, we will head north, up steep and broken terrain to the east ridge of Flattop Mountain.  We expect to encounter mixed snowfields and rock, exploring for appropriate routes as we ascend.  Snowfields of moderate to steeper pitch may be encountered as well as broken rock of Class 3 difficulty are anticipated.  Rock scrambling and snow climbing skills are required for this climb.  Once atop the east ridge of Flattop Mountain, we will either descend via the hiking trail, or descend on snow  and rock down to the trail between Bear and Odessa Lakes.  The trip will finish at the Bear Lake parking lot.

This trip is a field exercise for the Fort Collins Group's Alpine Scrambling Course, and students in the course will have roster priority.  However,  persons not enrolled in the course, who are judged as qualified by the Leaders may be accepted on the roster if there is room.

A climbing helmet is required, as well as an ice axe, and the ability to use it for self-belay and arrest.
