The Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness hosts more than 2,000 campers in the three-month summer season. The US Forest Service completed a campsite inventory between 2008 and 2010 and data shows that there are 728 campsites in MBSW and of those, 219 (30%) are within 100’ of lakes or streams. In the arid environment of Colorado, riparian areas are a crucial habitat types for wildlife. Over 80% of all animal species utilize this narrow strip of land adjacent to streams and lakes and depend upon its lush vegetation for food and shelter. By removing campsites from riparian areas volunteers will greatly improve wildlife habitat.

The Colorado Mountain Club (CMC), in partnership with the Aspen-Sopris Ranger District and Wilderness Workshop, will rehabilitate a portion of these campsites along West Maroon Creek by closing the worst of the damaging campsites to future recreational use. Very few campsites are designated within wilderness areas. Closing these campsites will not reduce the number of people allowed to camp in the MBSW, rather it will encourages visitors to the area to select campsite locations that do not negatively impact the riparian area.

Register below and you will be contacted by CMC Staff. Sorry, no doggies allowed. You must provide your own camping gear.If you need to cancel, please give us adequate notice. This is critical to the success of our project and helps us plan for food.

If you are a CMC member, it is recommended that you log in to register.
