The Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness hosts more than 2,000 campers in the three-month summer season. The US Forest Service completed a campsite inventory between 2008 and 2010 and data shows that there are 728 campsites in MBSW. To provide an experience of solitude, the Forest Service requires that all campsites be at least 100 feet from the trail. Unfortunately, over time illegal campsites have been established within 100 feet of the trails.

The Colorado Mountain Club (CMC), in partnership with the Aspen-Sopris Ranger District and Wilderness Workshop, will rehabilitate a portion of these campsites near beautiful Crater Lake.  Closing these campsites will not reduce the number of people allowed to camp in the MBSW, rather it will encourage visitors in the area to select campsite locations that do not negatively impact others Wilderness experience.
After a day of stewardship, we will have a day of fun exploring this absolutely stunning place. We will either hike Buckskin Pass, West Maroon Pass, Willow Lake, or nearly anything the group decides. This should be prime leaf season and the perfect way to enjoy the fall equinox. Space is limited so sign up right now before, it's too late!

Register below and you will be contacted by CMC Staff. Sorry, no doggies allowed. If you need to cancel, please give us adequate notice. This is critical to the success of our project and helps us plan for food.

If you are a CMC member, it is recommended that you log in to register.

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
