Lecture Tuesday March 7

Field Day Saturday March 11

We used to call this BMS Instructor Orientation but the slate of classes has changed dramatically since last year. So these workshops will be more than simply preparing instructors for BMS. We will help prepare you to help teach any of the classes sponsored by the Technical Climbing School: Navigation Levels 1 & 2, Basic Climbing, Intermediate Rock, Basic Ice, Basic Snow, Technical Snow, Rock Seconding, Trad Lead, Technical Ice Climbing, Sport Climbing, Anchors, Rescue Levels 1, 2, & 3, Basic Aid Climbing.

We believe very strongly that the purpose of the classes is to do more than train students; it is to train instructors as well. That is, we want to provide you with the tools necessary to help you be the most effective teacher you can be. An added benefit is that you gain a much deeper understanding of the skills you learned as a student.

So, even if you think there is only a small chance that you might be able to teach this year, or next year, or beyond, feel free to join us. I don't need to resort to crude enticements such as the promise of 18% discount at Bent Gate during class or free pizza and beer at the Workshop. I will rely on your altruistic spirit and your magnanimous desire to pass along the knowledge you have acquired.

At the lecture on Tuesday we will look at a number of things, including how the new modular system affects instruction and curriculum. We will take a close look at Safety and Risk Management. We will review some of the technical points in the curriculum. We will have breakout sessions to look at various scenarios you might encounter as an instructor. And more.

On the field day at Castlewood, we will have various sessions from which you can choose. We will cover Navigation, Knots, Anchors, Belay & Rappel, Ascending the Rope, Escaping a Loaded Belay, Rappelling past an obstruction, and more. It is not necessary to attend the lecture before the field day, although you will miss the pizza and beer.

So, if you think you might want to help teach, please join us. We will have a lot of fun.

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
