Lecture April 26, 6:00-9:00PM
Field Day April 30, all day starting at 6:00AM

This class is an introduction to snow travel with a view toward alpine activity. This class is required for completion of the Basic Mountaineering certificate. There are no prerequisites for this class.


We will cover gear: clothing, ice axe, crampons.
We will mention snowshoes but not spend much time.



We will cover how to ascend, traverse and descend snow with and without crampons.
We will cover the French, German, and American techniques.
We will cover the various ice axe grips and swings, depending on slope.
We will cover walking in balance and the rest step.
We will cover kicking steps and chopping steps.
We will cover self-belay and self-arrest.
We will cover glissading.



We will provide ice axes but you are welcome to bring your own.
Be prepared for winter conditions.
Snowshoes might be required, depending on the snow.
Gaiters are recommended.



We will not cover Avalanche Awareness; there is a separate course on this topic.



Note that classes sometimes show "Sessions"; Basic Climbing Session A, for example. Sessions are simply alternate dates of the same class. In other words, you may choose Session A or Session B, depending on which dates work best for you. You do not have to complete both Session A and Session B.



Cancellation Policy:

Classes must have minimum four students signed up and requisite number of instructors. If either number is too low class may be cancelled,





Refund Policy:

Student/Participant requests for refunds of tuition/fees must be requested in writing (e-mail) to the appropriate school or event director. Requests made prior to 30 days before the beginning of the school/event will be processed less a $10 handling fee. Requests made within 30 days of the school/event will be refunded at 50% of the amount paid. No refunds will be made after the beginning of the school/event. However, a refund less $10 can be obtained if a person is found to take the original student’s place in a school.
