Lecture May 8, 6:00PM-9:00PM

Field Day May 13, all day starting early

This class is a follow up to Basic Snow and covers technical skills you need to climb a snow couloir. This class is required for completion of the Basic Mountaineering certificate. There are two prerequisites for this class: Introduction to Climbing and Basic Snow.

Important Note: In addition to the field day, you will be required to do a snow climb. These snow climbs do not have fixed dates but there will be several in the CMC calendar. You will sign up for these trips just as you do for any CMC trip. You must have your C Hiker Classification in order to sign up for this trip.

We will cover roped team travel, including rope management and kiwi coils.
We will cover dividing the rope and tying in with the Alpine Butterfly.
We will cover signals and pacing.
We will cover team self-arrest.

We will cover anchors: vertical fluke(s), deadman, bollard.
We will cover hip belay and carabiner-ice axe belay.
We will cover running belays.

We will provide helmets, harnesses, belay devices, and ice axes but you are welcome to bring your own.

Be prepared for winter conditions.
Snowshoes might be required, depending on the snow.
Gaiters are recommended.

We will not cover Avalanche Awareness; there is a separate course on this topic.
We will not cover glacier travel and crevasse rescue; there are separate classes on these topics.

Note that classes sometimes show "Sessions"; Basic Climbing Session A, for example. Sessions are simply alternate dates of the same class. In other words, you may choose Session A or Session B, depending on which dates work best for you. You do not have to complete both Session A and Session B.
