Details

We will be snowshoeing up to Lost Lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. (https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fsm91_058151.pdf)  We will start off at the winter trailhead on Hessie Road (elevation 8820') and hike 1.3 miles on the snow packed road to the Hessie Trailhead. From there we will hike 1.4 miles up to the lake (elevation 9800'). Once at the lake we will demonstrate how to harvest snow blocks for use in building wind stopping snow walls that can protect a tent or other snow structures.

The hiking will take about 3.5 - 4.5 hours. With travel included plan on the whole trip taking no less than 5 hours.  We will route around to avoid any avalanch terrain.

You should have some experience hiking and be in decent physical condition.  You must have snowshoes.  If you don't have snowshoes, you can rent them from these places:

Notes

for future trips,  note--good to get there early, the trail head parking fills up fast. Trail was firm packed, day was warm and above freezing, lots of people hiking to lake as we were departing.
