This trip is sponsored by the Denver Group Trails Committee and is exploratory.  The USFS is conducting a "social trail" inventory in Lost Creek and Mt Evans Wilderness areas and our Trails Committee is participating in that effort.  Harmonica Arch has become a popular hiking destination in recent years but there is no USFS system trail there.  As a result the area is laced with social trails from hikers making their own paths to and around the arch.  This trip is to familiarize ourselves with the social trail situation there by collecting GPS tracks in advance of a more thorough study in the coming months.

This is a short hike but will progress slowly because we will be looking for social trails and may have to backtrack.  It is potentially "difficult" because it is steep for the last 3/4 mile.  It is possible that we will not reach the arch if there are many social trails to check out. If you like GPS/map work this project may be for you.  You should have a GPS unit (or GPS enabled phone) if you come on the trip.  We will be posting our tracks to maps and doing subsequent GIS processing in an effort to sort out the various trails.  This project is a test case for USFS and CMC. We will use lessons learned here in other Lost Creek Wilderness areas (Wigwam, Bison Peak, and Lost Creek) known to be impacted by social trails.
