Cheesman Dam/Reservoir is located on the South Platte River 40 miles SW of Denver near Deckers and is part of the Denver water supply.  It has historical significance and is amply referenced on the Internet if you care to learn about it.  For many miles below the dam the river is a favorite for fly fishing.  There is a trail used mostly by fisherman (but certainly available for hiking) which traverses the canyon for 4 miles below the dam, sometimes next to the river and sometimes up on the canyon side.  Even with a GPS track there is so much up and down that elevation gain is hard to figure (that shown here is just an estimate).  We do an out and back on the trail in this beautiful area with a alternating turbulent and gentle river at our side most of the way.
