Join us for an exploratory backpack on the scenic Continental Divide Trail in the San Juans near Creede. Enjoy early fall colors on the trail and drive. This 24-mile backpack will take us from Big Meadows Reservoir to beautiful Archuleta Lake where we will camp very near the continental divide. From there we will hike on the divide four miles to Sawtooth junction and hike down valley via the Sawtooth, Goose Creek and Roaring Fork trails to a second car we will place at the Roaring Fork TH. The leader is a senior instructor in Wilderness Trekking School and has hiked most of the 3,000 mile Continental Divide Trail and other long trails.

9/8 Friday: leave Coors Tech lot in Golden at 6:30 am and drive to Creede for lunch. Drop one car at the Roaring Fork trailhead southwest of Creede, drive to Big Meadows Reservoir and hike 7 miles to Archuleta Lake to camp.

9/9 Saturday: hike 4 miles on the divide and down the Sawtooth trail 12.5 miles to the Roaring Fork TH. Option to camp partway, reducing the miles this day or motel in Creede.

9/10 Sunday, return home.

Notes

September weather in this location is normally beautiful, but there is a chance for poor weather. This hike is weather dependent; a go-no go decision will be made by the leader 2 days in advance. This hike requires a car shuttle, so at least one other car besides the leader’s car is necessary for the trip. There are options to extend this trip if participants are interested.

This hike is rated difficult and has a 2500’ climb in 7 miles on Day 1 to Archuleta Lake. Day 2 is 16.5 miles, but mostly downhill from the divide and the group may decide to camp, reducing the miles this day. Participants should have a C classification, be comfortable at altitude, in condition and able to hike the miles, and have backpacking experience. Leader permission is required; send your phone number to earthford@aol.com.  Food will be individual; plan on 2 lunches, snacks, 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners.
