CMC Denver Conservation Series 2018. Join us for a spring-time exploratory hike on Colorado Public Land Day on BLM land proposed for wilderness in the proposed 2018 DeGette Colorado Wilderness Bill! Learn about wilderness planning in Colorado and about climate change on public lands. There are several candidate locations near Canon City, including Beaver Creek, McIntyre Hills, Cooper Mountain, Table Mountain, Badger Creek and more. We will have a chance to explore two of these, probably Beaver creek WSA and Cooper Mountain Lands with Wilderness Characteristics. Learn about the BLM Resource Management Plan process and the anticipated Colorado Wilderness Bill by Rep. DeGette and our Conservation Series hikes around the state. We'll also talk about how climate change is affecting Colorado's ecosystems and what conservation can do about it.

This is a land of rock outcrops, domes, canyons, creeks and bighorn sheep. Saturday we will drive to a trail head at Beaver Creek and get in a half-day hike, and car camp near the trail head or nearby. We expect to have a social hour, group dinner, campfire and more talk about wildlife and conservation in Colorado. Sunday we will rise early and hike Cooper Mountain LWC for a day hike on our way home.

Notes

The hikes will be co-led by members of Wild Connections, CMC's partner on this project. The hikes will involve some off-trail scrambling and stream crossings. The leader is a senior instructor in Wilderness Trekking School and a member of Denver Conservation Committee and Wild Connections.

Food and water will be individual; plan on 2 lunches, snacks, 1 breakfast and 1 dinner.  If there is interest, we may do a communal dinner. There may not be treated water so bring at least 1 gallon or water treatment gear. Bring tents, sleeping bags and cooking equipment. Bring 10 essentials for hiking, trekking poles and water shoes.

The leader will provide more details as we approach the date.
