This class is designed to provide basic ice climbing instruction for HAMS students. In one evening and one field day on ice, HAMS Basic Ice will introduce novice or experienced rock climbers to the basics of ice climbing, and teach them to enjoy the sport  on top rope at the Ouray Ice Park. The course focuses on equipment, technique, and safety.

This course does not teach avalanche awareness or avalanche safety. These topics are covered in the Avalanche Terrain Avoidance Seminar or AIARE Level 1 School.

HAMS Basic Ice schedule:

Wall Night Instruction: 6:00- 9:00 pm, Wednesday Jan 31st

Field Day: Saturday February 3rd at the Ouray Ice Park

1. You must be enrolled in the HAMS program

2. You must have at least 10 days climbing experience on rock, i.e. you must be competent in basic climbing safety systems, including belaying, communication, rappelling, etc.   All students must demonstrate their ability to belay and to rappel during the introductory Wall Night.

If you are interested in learning to lead on ice and are an experienced trad leader, consider the Denver Technical Ice Climbing School (TICS).

Students will be expected to have the usual climbing gear for top roped ice climbing, including crampons, harness, helmet, etc. A limited number of ice tools will be made available. Students will be expected to have the necessary clothing and gear to negotiate snowy terrain in full winter.

We recommend using a warm pair of boots that will take hybrid or step-in crampons, a pair of gloves that are thin enough to give you dexterity on the climb yet warm enough to avoid frostbite, and a pair of warmer gloves to wear when belaying or waiting for a rope. Toe and hand warmers may be helpful!

You will be responsible for securing your hotel and meals while on the trip; however, HAMS will reserve a block of rooms at a local hotel that will be made available at a discounted rate.

Refund Policy: There is a $20 cancelation fee, and no refunds are given for no-shows.

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
