From TH on Hwy 103, we climb on-trail to Chief Mtn and off-trail to adjoining Papoose Mtn, and, depending on the weather, the snow, and the group, maybe also off-trail to Squaw Peak. A segment of this trip will be exploratory for the leader.

Please bring both snowshoes and microspikes.  Goggles and Poles are a good idea too.  Weather dependent, we should be back to Wooly Mammoth early afternoon.

Nine of us; 2250"' elevation gain (used 1/29/2016 trip data as none of us had GPS) and roughly 7.5 miles to three peaks: Chief, Papoose, and Squaw in that order. We wore micro spikes on the Chief ascent. Halfway down from Chief, we turned easterly off-trail on snowshoes to climb up and over Papoose to the Squaw Pass road. We had lunch at the tower and returned via the road to the cars. When we left the cars at 8:30 a.m. it was 9 degrees and at 2 pm it was 12 degrees. The wind was strong on top parts of Chief.
WARNING: DO NOT LEAD this hike from PAPOOSE to SQUAW down the southeasterly Ridge of Papoose. You will run directly into an unmonitored firing range spot on the road to Squaw. We amazingly missed shooters by 20 minutes - but one cannot tell if they are there until you are within range of being shot. had lunch at the tower, and returned to the trail and the cars. . Another gorgeous and chilly day in the mountains.

Gas cost will be .30 cents x 50 miles = $15 split by all in each car. The rest stop on the way to the trailhead is  Buchanan Park Recreation Center in Evergreen  (32299 Ellingwood Trail).
