Location

Our snowshoe hike today will be an out-and-back route to the wonderful blue ice of Grace Falls at the base of Notchtop Mountain in the Rocky Mountain National Park.  Snowshoes are required.  We will meet at 8:00 AM in the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center (BMVC) parking lot and carpool from there to the Bear Lake Trailhead.  There are bathrooms at both BMVC and the trailhead.  At the BMVC meeting place, please park in the outbound lane spots farthest from the Visitor Center building (and closest to the parking lot exit).  A Park Pass will be required for each car we take into the Park so, if you have one, please bring it.

Details

From our starting point at the Bear Lake TH (9,450') we will take what will likely be a well-tracked route that crosses Two Rivers Lake (10,620') about 3 miles in then reaches Lake Helene (10,580') just beyond.  Snowshoes may or may not be needed to this point but MicroSpikes or similar shoe traction devices are recommendedSnowshoes will be required from Lake Helene to Grace Falls and back as we drop into the Odessa Gorge.  Wind permitting, we will take a break at an awesome viewpoint on the rocks to the north of Lake Helene.  A sharp, snowy descent followed by a rising traverse will put us at the base of the ephemeral Grace Falls (10,260').  This is a magnificent wall of blue ice in the winter and, this winter, is the largest and bluest the falls has ever been!  We will likely wander about a bit in the flats below Grace Falls and look for a sunny, windless lunch spot before climbing back out of the gorge by retracing our outbound tracks.

Overall, this will be about a 7.5 mile effort with a trailhead to trailhead time of about 6 hours.  Our pace will be comfortable.  We will make a very slow (safe) descent on the steeps below Lake Helene and an equally slow ascent upon our return from the falls to the lake.

Notes

Snowshoes will be required.  MicroSpikes or similar shoe traction devices should also be carried.  Gaiters, trekking poles, and snow pants will be extremely helpful.  This hike WILL BE previewed.  I will keep the group posted on expected trail conditions and forecasted weather as we get closer to the hike date.

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
